How to Delete Your Account

You can delete your VAY account at any time using either of the following methods:

Option 1: Delete from the App

  1. 1Open VAY on your device
  2. 2Go to Settings
  3. 3Tap Delete Account
  4. 4Confirm deletion when prompted. This action cannot be undone.

Option 2: Delete via Email

Send an email to delete@vay.foundation with your VAY username. We will verify your identity and process the deletion within 48 hours. You will receive a confirmation email when the deletion is complete.

What Gets Deleted

When you delete your account, the following data is permanently removed:

Messages & Call History

All conversations, message history, and call logs are permanently erased from your device and our servers.

Contacts

Your contact list within VAY is deleted. This does not affect your device's address book.

Pilot Data

All Pilot observer events, diagnostics, and monitoring history are removed.

Account & Profile

Your username, public key, profile information, and all account settings are permanently deleted.

Encryption Keys

Your Ed25519 key pair and all E2EE session keys are destroyed. Messages encrypted with these keys become permanently unreadable.

Subscriptions

Active Business or First subscriptions are cancelled. You should also cancel through the App Store to prevent future charges.

What Cannot Be Recovered

Account deletion is permanent and irreversible. The following cannot be recovered after deletion:

  • E2EE keys — Your encryption keys are destroyed. Past messages encrypted with these keys cannot be decrypted by anyone, including VAY.
  • Messages — Because VAY uses end-to-end encryption, we do not have copies of your messages. Once deleted from your device, they are gone permanently.
  • Username — Your username may become available for others to claim after deletion.

Secured Accounts & CodeWord

If you have a Secured account, your CodeWord will be permanently invalidated upon account deletion. The CodeWord cannot be used to recover the deleted account. If you intend to use VAY again in the future, you will need to create a new account with a new username and new CodeWord. There is no way for VAY to restore a deleted Secured account.

Deletion Timeline

Immediate

Your device is wiped: all local messages, keys, Pilot data, and app settings are deleted. You are signed out immediately.

Within 48h

Your account is removed from active systems. Other users will no longer see you in their contacts or be able to reach you.

Within 30 days

All server-side data — account records, metadata, Pilot events, crash reports, and any remaining relay data — is permanently purged from all systems and backups.

Subscriptions & Billing

Deleting your VAY account does not automatically cancel your App Store subscription. To avoid being charged after account deletion, you must also cancel your subscription through your device's Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions, or through the App Store. If you have already been charged for an unused period, contact Apple for a refund per their refund policy.
